Everything of the Fate Series Order & Plot / Mr. Jin's Anime

Hello there, this is Mr. Jin.

I know a lot of you want to watch the Fate series, but having trouble with figuring out in what order to watch them.

Today, I will give you a complete guide to help you to start the legendary anime, the Fate Series.

What is the Fate Series about ?

The origin of the anime Fate series is a visual novel called Fate Stay Night. A visual novel is a computer game that allows you to choose your own dicision. Basically the original game has three different routes depending on the player's choices.

1) The Fate Route (focuses on Saber)

2) The Unlimited Blade Works Route (focuses on Rin Tohsaka)

3) The Heaven's Feel Route (focuses on Sakura Matou)

To understand the world of the Fate Series, you need to know what <Holy Grail War> and <Servants> are.

A Magician chosen by the Holy Grail become a Master and can summon a Servant to fight for the powerful 'Holy Grail' which has wish-granting power. Only one magi can summon one Servant to fight for them.

There are seven classes of Servants which are Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, Berserker, and Assasin.

In each class, there are 'Heroic Sprit' from history, including Alexander the Great (Rider), Hercules (Berserker), King Arthur (Saber), Gilgamesh (Archer) etc.

In What Order Should I Watch?

Even though there are a lot of animes titled 'Fate', many anime lovers tend to watch only 'Fate Stay Night' and 'Fate Zero' which are the two most popular series among the Fate series.

So do you want to start the series?

You can choose either "in Release Order" or "in Chronological Order".

Just remember that if you start to watch the series in order of the release, than the story might jump back and forth.

I personally recommend you to watch the series in chronological order, because this can help you to understand the story better.

=== In Release Order ===

1. Fate Stay Night

2. Fate Zero

3. Fate Proto type

4. Fate Stay Night: UBW (Unlimited Blade Works)

5. Fate Apocrypha

6.  Fate Stay Night: Heaven's Feel

7. Fate Stay Night: Extra Last Encore

8. Fate Grand Order

=== In Chronological Order ===

1. Fate Proto type

2. Fate Apocrypha

3. Fate Zero

4. Fate Stay Night

5.  Fate Stay Night: UBW (Unlimited Blade Works)

6. Fate Stay Night: Heaven's Feel

7. Fate Stay Night: Extra Last Encore

8. Fate Grand Order

=== Spin-off Series===

1. Carnival Phantasm

2. Prisma Illya

3. Today's Menu for the Emiya Family

4. The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II

I recommend you to watch spin-off series after watching the original Fate Series.

Fate Stay Night

(Jan, 2006 ~ Jun, 2006)

Fate Stay Night (06.01.2006~16.06.2006) Production - Studio din

14 years ago, the original version of Fate Stay Night came out and this is the first animation of the Fate series based on the Fate route of the game.

This sereies was released a long time ago, it's simply not surpring that many anime lovers who are used to high quality of Japanese animations can't handle this lo-fi anime. Some might think watching the original Fate Stay Night is waste of time!

Personally, I don't think it is right to compare it with the animations released on these days.

Also, the original Fate Stay Night is the reason why I like the Fate series. I hope you to watch this series, and you can become a true Fate Lover. :)

Fate Zero

(Oct, 2011 ~ Jun, 2012)

Fate Zero (01.10.2011~23.06.2012) Production - U portable

Fate Zero is about the past story of the Fate Stay Night.

Fate Stay Night covers the story of the Fifth Holy Grail War and the generation of Shiro Emiya.  Fate Zero covers the story of the Fourth Holy Grail War and the generation of Kiritsugu, the father of Shiro.

In Fate Zero, you can see the childhood of the main characters appeared in the Fate Stay Night.

Personally, I would say Fate Zero is one of the best Fate Series. Not only because of the drawings and fascinating battle scenes, its well-organized plot should be applauded.

Fate Prototype

(Sep, 2014 ~ Apri, 2017)

Fate Prototype (10.09.2014~26.04.2017)

The Fate prototype has a different universe compare to the normal Fate series.

The gender of male and female characters who are in Fate Stay Night is reversed and the story is based on the First Holy Grail War. Since this one has not released in animation I will not be described in detail.

Fate Stay Night UBW

(Oct, 2014 ~ Dec, 2014)

Fate Stay Night UBW (04.10.2014~27.12.2014) Production - U portable

Fate Stay Night UBW is the most famous and well-established work in the Fate series. Like the original Fate Stay Night, it deals with the the Fifth Holy Grail War. The story is similar to the original Fate Stay Night, but it shows a different development and the proportion of the hero, Shiro Emiya, increases.

If you watch the UBW first, the quality of the drawings of the orginal Fate Stay Night would be unbearable.

There are a theater version and a TVA version, and for me, the TVA version was more interesting than theater version.

Fate Apocrypha

(Jul, 2017 ~ Nov, 2017)

Fate Apocrypha(02.07.2017~21.11.2017) Production - A-1 pictures

The Fate Apocrypha shows a entirely different storyline from the original, and it seems that the heroine does not exist.

The way they battle for the Holy Grail is quite different in Fate Apocrypha.

Originally, the magician summon the servent and those two become a team, but in Fate Apocrypha, each red and black team summons seven servents. Also a new servant summoned by the Holy Grail, Ruler, acts as a mediator of the war. Since the appearance of a Ruler is so simliar with the look of Saber, I thought he was Saber at first, but was a completely different character.
I didn't have much fun at the beginning, but I enjoyed the animation as I went to the second half. You can enjoy the spectacular and wonderful battle scenes based on the Greek mythology and other myths. You can watch it anytime, regardless of the order, and if you are a fan of Fate series, I recommend you to watch it.

Fate Stay Night Heaven's Fell

Fate Stay Night Heaven's Fell

The universe of the Fate Stay Night Heaven's Fell is same as Gupes or UBW, but it is based on the heroin "Sakura" route. This is the darkest version out of the Fate series, the most unpopular story among the fans. You might think this anime is absoulely different from the original Fate series.

For me, this was the least interesting series out of the serieses, but if you are a fan of the Fate, it's a must-see series!

Fate Extra Last Encore

Fate Extra Last Encore

The Fate Extra Last Encore features the largest number of Masters and Servants in the Fate series.

Well, the battle scenes in this series were not fancy or in a big scale. All of the battles in this series are tournament-style, which is different from the original view or the world of Fate series. I don't think I've seen a big battle except for the early battle scene.. But it's not that low quality, and the storyline is worth of watching.

Fate Grand Order

Fate Grand Order

The Fate Grand Order shows the most different storyline and worldview of the Fate series, and it is an animated work with the release of smart phone games. I've played games, but it was boring. :(

In the Fate Grand Order, there are so-called, servant reasearchers who are trying to make servants artificially, rather than summoning servant in a natural way.

Also, Leonidas, the head of the movie 300, came out as a Servant and that was interesting part as well.

Among the three goddesses of this movie, there is a character that looks very similar to Tosaka Lin but is not related at all! If you find a connection with original Fate Stay Night, I would say Gilgamesh, but with different personality.

This was the Order of the Fate series, the universe, and the short storyline of each series.

I didn't write the details of the series and wanted to keep it simple because of the risk of spoilers.

I hope that this posting can be a valuable guidance preparing for your journey to the Fate Series.
